National Significance
The basis of the QVMAG collections was formed by the Launceston Mechanics' Institute which opened in the 1840s. Since then the collections have continued to grow and today are of national significance.

QVMAG Collections encompass a range of disciplines including Fine Art, Decorative Arts and Design, History, Physical Sciences and Astronomy.

There are four main collection areas: Visual Arts and Design; History; Natural Sciences and Physical Sciences.

The QVMAG has a duty of care to the wealth of items in its collections. Its Conservation Department plays an important role in caring for collection materials and ensuring their preservation for future generations to study and enjoy.
