Dark Mofo 2025

Dark Mofo 2025Dark Mofo 2025

Mona's midwinter festival celebrating the dark through film, music, noise, light public art, and food.

Dark Mofo is back for 2025, transforming Tasmania's capital into a playground of art, music, fire, and nocturnal revelry.

Following a stripped-back 2024, this year's festival returns with a full program of unforgettable events. With the official schedule now released, there's no better time to lock in your Dark Mofo adventure-embrace the darkness and experience Tasmania at its most daring.

The road to 2025 was longer than we had planned. But, from the moment the last swimmer left the sand and as the festival slumbered, a tension has been building-steady and patient.

On the precipice of the festival, I invite you to sit in that tension; to feel its weight press upon you. The pull of anticipation, the sharp edges of fear, the flicker of joy, and the promise of release. Dwell in that short, sharp breath before the cold water rushes over you, savour the hum of the amplifier as it fills the air, stand in the shadow of the threshold that looms before you. The stillness before we are remade.

And when you have passed through, return to the fire with neighbours and strangers to share the stories of those things you have seen, both terrible and glorious.

Forewords
These days, being old, I'm thinking about legacy. Legacy is a state of being satisfied now about then, but it's also a way of perpetuating status-reaching out to those that care about what you care about.

One of those who cares about what I care about is Chris, Dark Mofo's new director. If the festival is as good as the indicators say it will be, I'm in the fortunate position of being able to claim credit for the excellence of the festival ongoing. I don't deserve credit, Chris does. But he speaks softly, and I carry a big stick, and despite my tiny contribution, I get to write an introduction.

If you have a good time, yeah, that was me. If it didn't go so well for you, blame bloody Chris.

Getting Around
Wander around the waterfront and city from venue to venue, and get the blood flowing to the extremities. Check the map; festival venues are pinpointed, and most are within walking distance of the Hobart waterfront and CBD.

Free Events
Lots of events in the art program are free, with some ticketed exceptions. The Nude Solstice Swim is free (but you do still need to register for a ticket), plus Ogoh-ogoh, Dark Park, Basilica and Winter Feast after 9pm. Most free events will not require tickets, so you may need to queue for an unknown amount of time.

Info Booth
The info booth is a resource for maps, programs and general information from our friendly staff. Find it at the Hunter Street Car Park, near Dark Park.

When
Every June in Hobart (exact dates vary but coincides with the Winter Solstice)

Opening Times
Thursday 5-Sun 8 June, 4-10pm
Thursday 12-Sun 15 June, 4-10pm

Where?
The city of Hobart is lit up (literally) and major exhibitions can be found all over town, including at the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG), and the Federation Concert Hall, among many other venues. A public art playground called Dark Park in an abandoned shipping yard is a popular place to visit, and international musicians and artists perform around the city at local theatres and public venues. Events take place in surrounding suburbs of Hobart as well. Consult the schedule each year for details on exhibits and shows. Image thanksto Tourism Australia & Graham Freeman.
