Bastille Day
Bastille Day is celebrated annually on 14 July and is France's National Day. Known in France as La Fete Nationale, it commemorates the Fete de la Federation held in 1790 on the first anniversary of the Storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789, one of the defining events of the French Revolution.
The storming of the Bastille became a powerful symbol of liberty and the people's determination to challenge absolute monarchy. The following year's Fete de la Federation celebrated national unity and reconciliation, marking an important step towards the creation of modern France.
Today, Bastille Day is celebrated throughout France with military parades, fireworks, concerts, community events and family gatherings. It is a day of national pride that honours France's history while celebrating its culture, traditions and values.
